Back in the 1980s, parties did not come more extravagant and hedonistic than those held at Area in New York. For three brief but memorable years, the worlds of art and fashion, music and film, collided four times a week at the downtown Manhattan nightclub.
Lucky for us, London-raised photographer Ben Buchanan, was there every night to capture the shenanigans, and is now, for the first time, opening his archive to tell the story of the New York nightlife at its peak. The local launch of his book, Area 1983 – 1987 will be held at Book and Kitchen this Friday.
Being the first club to boast a unisex bathroom, a shark tank, a house reptile and the first to change its look entirely every six weeks, it attracted the likes of Andy Warhol, Keith Richards, Boy George, Billy Idol, Naomi Campbell and Jean-Paul Gualtier.
Don’t miss this change to get your hands on never-before-seen images of some of the biggest stars in the last 50 years.
