Celebrity trainer Helle Hammonds knows fitness. And why wouldn’t she: the 35-year-old’s years of training clients – celebrity or not – have equipped Cheshire-born Helle with enough experience to merit health guru status. A previous Barry’s Bootcamp instructor, Helle has now launched her own fitness concept, GymClass, which promises a total body workout combining strength conditioning and high intensity interval training. The Holland Park gym owner gives us the 4-1-1 on her signature GymClass workouts in our exclusive Q&A. Here’s what she had to say.
Can you please tell us a little bit about what made you want to create your own fitness program, and how you came up with the name?
I saw a gap with the results you achieve from personal training and the atmosphere of training within a group setting, that I wanted to create a fitness program that was able to give more detailed attention than most classes using skilled equipment. The name quite simply came from the fact that we run gym classes all day every day so you don’t have to think about what you are going to do, you just show up in your gym gear.
Each session comprises two components: high intensity interval training (HIIT) and strengthening. Why are these important for keeping fit and healthy?
HIIT component is important for general cardiovascular fitness, burning fat from your body and calories from food with the added benefit of the after exercise burn. The strength component is important to create long, lean, toned muscles, strengthen bones, joints and tendons, and rid the body of cellulite and saggy skin.
How does GymClass differ from other training methods and more specifically, circuit training?
GymClass differs because we take the best from proven researched techniques and delivered the classes in our specially designed studio with highly motivational music, techniques and settings. We use a constant variation in our sessions to keep your body guessing, therefore there is no plateau in results.
Is there anyone in particular who would benefit from GymClass?
Yes, GymClass would benefit everyone. All classes are scalable to ability. All exercises are based on moving your body in many planes of movement creating a solid mid line (core).
How large are GymClass classes?
We like to keep our classes small and exclusive so we can give that individual attention and high motivation; there are maximum 14 people in a class.
Each GymClass session is 50 minutes. What are your thoughts on other classes that claim to achieve similar results (or better) in workout sessions of a shorter time length?
Each 50 minute class contains a dynamic warm up and cool down. There are many different training methods out there, but from my experience this is the perfect length of time to achieve increased fitness, fat loss, strength building and greater balance, coordination and flexibility.
How often should we GymClass?
We recommend that you come to GymClass at least three times plus per week, but as we offer a diverse program it can even be done every day.
What’s next for GymClass? Is there anything exciting in the pipeline such as accompanying workout nutritional plans or a supplement range?
We have lots of exciting things happening in 2015 we are working on: new online content and we are opening our second GymClass… Watch this space!
